LEANDRO CASTRO INTERVIEW: ANE GRAFF

ANE GRAFF - SOFT OUTER COVER (2015).

PROFILE
Name: Ane Graff
Born: 08.12.74
Occupation: Artist
Place: Oslo, Norway

Where are you right now?

I’m sitting on my couch at home a Saturday night, trying to cram in some work. My boyfriend is sitting across from me, downloading Twin Peaks, season 1.

Who is Ane Graff after all?

An artist trying to figure things out. Using art as active philosophy.

What is the focus of your work?

The new materialisms of feminist science studies. I am interested in matter and materiality, and I have a special interest in how we can change the assessment of our physical reality through a focus on quantum physics.

ANE GRAFF - THROUGH STONE (2015).

Where does your inspiration come from?

Science, art, people. What I make is a mashup of what I experience and what I read. I am a maker. If I don’t get to produce work for a while, I can become quite frustrated.

Where do you do all your creative work?

In my studio. I have to be able to make a mess.

Are you an easy person to live with?

No. Hahaha! I am very sweet, but I need a lot of attention.

What is your favorite time of year? Why?

Winter is too cold, summer too intense, it has to be either spring or fall. Not sure which.

ANE GRAFF - THROW (2015).

Describe your personal style in three words.

Quirky and minimal with a red lip.

What is your favorite color?

Blue, although I hardly ever use it in a work.

What is your guiltiest pleasure?

Real housewives.... so exotic and so far away from my reality.

What book are you reading by now?

The Birth of Physics by Michel Serres.

ANE GRAFF - YOU ARE MY MARBLE - 4 (2012).

Can you name an artist you admire?

I admire Pierre Huyghe, bu teven more, I admire the curator Carolyn Christov Bakargiev and the feminist science scholar and quantum physicist Karen Barad.

What do you think about art?

Art is my life, and I love it. It’s that simple. I am convinced more people would go see exhibitions if they didn’t have such crazy schedules, if the wheels of society weren’t moving so fast. Art gives pause for reflection and depth, but it’s hard to reflect when everything is moving so fast.

Your recent songs you're listening at the moment?

I love Ane Brun, and her songs, especially ”Your tears are much heavier these days” from 2011.

ANE GRAFF - YOU ARE MY MARBLE - 2 (2012).

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?

My tendency to worry.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

I’m tired...

Where would you most like to be right now?

Hawaii. I have never been, and I need a vacation.

Thank you very much, Ane Graff!
