Who is Sven Marquardt after all?

Do what you want. Even if I didn't know that in my youth, I knew exactly what I didn't want/ didn't do. If the refusal of the origin was found grewing up in the dictatorial system ?! Or in the care taking childhood of my parents?! Or even just out of the 'no future' feeling of the eighties Punk & New Wave time in East-Berlin?! Out of todays view I din't mind, because for everything worked well...Until now.Do what you want.

Did you always want to be a photographer?

No. In East-Germany you had to learn a profession after school. So I became a photographer by chance. Years later, in the beginning of the eighties, the camera turned more and more to a stylistic element of mine. And it's still until now.

How personal are your photography?

Of course my photographs are very very personal. But if you do only people, the moment you shoot the photo is due to the protagonists, who are willing open up in a different way as much as their allow to get closer to them. Therefore to feel a distance between us could be very exciting.

Where does your inspiration come from?

Life itself ?! Sounds a bit impassioned?! I had some years where films had a great Inspiration?! Music?! Friends? Colleagues?! Other creative people/companions could be my impressions. There are much more endlessly.

Do you always carry a camera with you?

I never have a camera with me. Only if I'm having a shooting, which is normally in the surroundings of Berlin. On my journeys I just do snapshots with my iPhone as a kind of sketch for me personally. Two weeks ago I went to the Phillipines where I took my camera for the first time. I traveled with my assistant Hardy. And finally we found a great location where I did a shooting with Hardy. He was several times in front of my camera. I do like the result. Maybe a new time begins? Who knows?

Do you collect art yourself?

No! In my apartment I have some Marquardt pictures, from different epochs, there are changing sometimes and there are some pictures of my friends, I wished to have. Nothing more.

How to get to Berghain? There is a 'code'?

Anyhow I hope that question will not be asked. But certainly there it is again. Far from it.

How would you describe the Berghain goer?

Is Berlin your city? Why?

I was born in Berlin, even if it feels sometimes like I'm the only one who was originally from here?! Berlin was always Inspiration for me and I love the new Berlin as well, it's variety and it's internationalism. Berlin my base, my native city. My home!

Are you an easy person to live with?

That's maybe better asking my people surrounding me.
For sure it wasn't always easy with me. But it could be uneasy with anyone. For myself it was also not easy. In the last few years it feels like coming closer to myself. Without feeling any standstill. Close to myself. Feels good.

Describe your personal style in three words.

Autonomous, differently, warlike.

What is your favorite color?

Black and white.

What book are you reading by now?

At the moment I don't read any books.

What is your favorite film of all time?

"In a Year with 13 Moons" by Rainer Werner Fassbinder.

Can you name an artist you admire?

Robert Mapplethorpe. As I saw his photographs in the beginning 80's, that changed my life.

What do you think about art?

I don't like to call me an artist. I always call myself a photographer. On art exibitions I'm not feeling well after a short while?!All the self-important ego's and on top myself ?! There is something to much. Art should touch me, provoke me, distress me, enchant me, turn me up, giving me a gentl touch.

Your recent songs you're listening at the moment?

I don't love you anymore / ANOHNI.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?

No regrets.

Which words or phrases do you most overused?

Without surface no depths.

The final question: Where would you most like to be right now?

In the past few years I was allowed to see a lot of the world. Therefore I also must learn liberty to let things go. On travels we get always a reminder to realize our finiteness and this reminds us to be modest. If one day anyone comes to a stop, it's good to know that everything will go on everywhere on earth, except our own heartbeat. And that's good so.
I'm in Berlin right now and I love the light of the early autumn morning outside. I'm very happy about this lovely day.
